Public Sketchbook (pilot) is a paid + mentored opportunity for emerging public artists of the Noosa region to design + install their untested visual ideas in Sunshine Beach for three months.

Then we paint over it … like it never happened.

The first (pilot) round is with Noosa-region based, emerging public artist + ceramicist, Tess Miller, thanks to funds received by Noosa’s Regional Arts Development Fund.

Applications for the subsequent three rounds have been received from artists internationally and are currently closed while funding for delivery is secured.

While the first iteration settles in onsite, we’d love your thoughts on Public art in Noosa – via this short survey

We’ll share the anonymous responses with project partners, and your input will also just be great to know, as we plan future versions, projects, etc.

SUNSHINE BEACH PILOT ROUND – ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Tess Miller is a sculptural ceramic artist based in Noosa, exploring the alchemical quality of clay + fluidity of form. Her sculptures, or ‘broods’ / families of sculptures are particularly notable, as each piece contributes to a cohesive narrative while maintaining its unique identity.

Alison Mooney produces studio works, public murals and interactive installations. Drawn from attitudes of cultural activism, Mooney’s practice weaves with it elements of play, dimension + ‘beauty’. Her public art invites interaction: her palettes + compositions move with and against surrounding environments and architecture.

ABOUT THE WORK

Tapping into the colours of the community and conditions of the site, the artists designed their collaboration to offer a sense of elevated belonging. They wanted the work to sit comfortably onsite but to also offer a fresh energy, more reflective of the life surrounding the structure, in contrast to the weathered roof which wasn’t to be included in the painting.

During multiple site visits, the artists documented things like how the light and shadows moved over the structure, who made use of the park and what did they seem to use it for.

Their design went through multiple iterations before project partners were presented with a final choice, and landed on the installed work.
